MRW benefit trail ride is back on

Postponed once, the Guffey Scramble fundraiser for Murphy-Reynolds-Wilson Fire and EMS is set for later this month.
Billed as a fun and educational non-competitive trail ride, the Saturday, Sept. 23 horse and mule event will raise funds for the district. The eight-mile course is open to all breeds.
The entry fee is $30 per rider or $20 for riders younger than 15.

The parking area will be located on a private land at the northwest end of Murphy.
The eight-mile loop will take riders along parts of the Oregon Trail near Murphy, and they’ll be able to learn about pioneer stockman Con Shea, who brought cattle to Owyhee County in 1869. The route of the Boise, Nampa and Owyhee Railroad also will be traced.
Participants will also pass through the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area and the Guffey Butte-Black Butte Archaeological District.
There is a short cut for those who don’t want to cover the full eight miles.

Proceeds benefit MRW Fire and EMS, which covers a 330-square-mile service area with 47 volunteer firefighters and EMTs. The agency responds to more than 110 emergency calls annually.
Money raised at the trail ride will help purchase needed safety and emergency response equipment.
During the trail ride, riders will draw prizes at each of the three checkpoints in a contest similar to a poker ride. Instead of playing cards, riders will draw cards with fun history facts about the Oregon Trail, Con Shea, and the BNO Railroad.
Food and drink will be available for purchase.
The Owyhee County Historical Museum in Murphy will be open during the ride to shed light on history such as the railroad, the Oregon Trail, Con Shea, or other aspects of Owyhee County history. In addition, the museum will play host to a a dinner at 6 pm, followed by the harvest dance with a local live band, Running for Cover.
